Details: In early September 2017 the island of St. Thomas was devastated by Hurricane Irma – sustained winds as high as 185 mph, with gusts even stronger than that, caused widespread destruction. Less than two weeks later strong rains from Hurricane Maria lashed the island. As one resident said “There’s no more normal. These were life changing events. Nothing will ever be the same.”
The Reformed Church of St. Thomas has been in the forefront of the efforts to get people back into their homes, and gradually the new normal is beginning to take shape.
Working with the Reformed Church, My Brothers Workshop and the Salvation Army, volunteers will assist with clean up and home repair, as well as clearing debris or damaged furniture, putting up tarps, cleaning, taking things to the dump.
Bunk bed accommodation will be available with good, but basic bathroom facilities, a dining room and a full kitchen.

Details: Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system slowly crossed over eastern Texas. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, prompted more than 17,000 rescues and caused nearly $200 billion in damage, primarily from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area.
Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, NJ, will lead a Young Adult Trip to Houston in early January 2018. Volunteers will primarily be involved in home repair – “lots of drywall”. All college aged adults – 18-25 – are invited.
